Dr. Hagler, our pediatric neurologist, fuses academic medicine and cutting-edge advances in neurological treatment with the attention and comfort of a small practice. Her practice structure allows for each patient to be seen in a timely manner and receive the care they deserve, always with attention to the details of each particular case.

Headache Treatment

Initial Visit

Dr. Hagler will take the time to get to know you or your child.  After obtaining a complete history and completing a full neurologic exam, you will sit together with Dr. Hagler to discuss the possible diagnoses and build an individualized treatment plan.  Dr. Hagler will provide education and answer any questions you may have.  You will leave feeling confident, with a concrete plan and tools for headache management.

Second Opinion Consultation

This appointment type is for those who have already seen another neurologist or headache specialist.  Dr. Hagler will obtain a complete history from you, and also spend the time needed to review previous consultation notes, imaging, test results and hospital records. She can be in touch with other treating physicians as needed as well.  Dr. Hagler knows that it can be frustrating to have headaches that have not responded to treatments tried thus far, and will make sure to give the situation a fresh set of eyes in a comfortable and reassuring setting.  She will work with you to come up with a treatment plan you are comfortable with.

Follow-up Appointment

These appointments will be spent seeing how things are going for you.  Dr. Hagler will review how current treatments are working and recommend modifications wherever necessary.  Headache management can be an ongoing process and our goal is to help with continued improvement so that you or your child is as minimally affected by headaches as possible.  Once headaches are well controlled, these appointments can be spaced further apart and used as check-ins and for medication refills and updated paperwork wherever needed.

Procedures

Dr. Hagler offers various procedures that can be very effective in headache management. These procedures are generally used in conjunction with other recommended treatment modalities.  One or more of these may or may not be appropriate depending on your case:

  • Botox Injections - Injection of onabotulinum toxin A in various spots on the forehead, scalp, neck, and shoulders is an FDA approved treatment for chronic migraine and can be extremely effective in some cases.

  • Nerve Blocks - Injection of a local anesthetic in the scalp or face in areas of certain peripheral nerves can be effective to break a bad headache, or when used regularly, in the prevention of headaches.

  • Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block - Application of a local anesthetic in the back of the nose targets the sensory nerve in that location, and similarly to nerve blocks, can be effective to break a bad headache, or when used regularly, in the prevention of headaches.

Initial Visit

Dr. Hagler will take the time to get to know you or your child.  After obtaining a complete history and completing a full neurologic exam, you will sit together with Dr. Hagler to discuss the possible diagnoses and build an individualized treatment plan.  Plan may include additional testing, medication, therapy referrals, as well as referral for specific neuropsychological testing through psychology when indicated.  Letters for school based accommodations when needed can be given as well.

Autism Evaluation

These initial evaluations will be divided into two separate appointments.  At the first appointment, the parent/s or guardians of the child will meet with Dr. Hagler without the child present to review the child’s history and all of the concerns being noted by parents and/or other caretakers.  This appointment allows you and Dr. Hagler ample focused time, without distractions, to go over concerns and also the opportunity to bring up any concerns that parents sometimes prefer not discuss in front of their child.  At the second appointment, Dr. Hagler will meet with parent/s or guardians and the child together.  Dr. Hagler can then interact directly with your child for further evaluation.  At the end of this appointment, Dr. Hagler will go over her impressions, document an autism diagnosis if appropriate, and provide recommendations regarding further testing if needed as well as treatment.  She will provide referrals needed for appropriate therapies.  As part of her evaluation, Dr. Hagler administers the CARS2 autism evaluation.  If required by insurance for coverage of therapies, a complete CARS2 report will be provided.  In some cases, referral to psychology for neuropsychological testing may be indicated.

Follow-up Appointment

These appointments will be spent seeing how things are going for you.  Dr. Hagler will review how current treatments are working and recommend modifications wherever necessary.

Updated paperwork as needed for school-based accommodations can be discussed as well.  For ADHD medication management, typically follow-up appointments will be monthly when introducing a new medication or changing doses.  Once on a stable medication dose, follow-up appointments will generally occur every three months.
